When did you start designing handbags?
I started designing handbags in 2002, 10 year anniversary next
year!
Why handbags? Why not dresses? Why not, um,
umbrellas?
I love handbags. Every girl loves handbags. I love
designing handbags, I didnt really ever think about it too much I
just follwed my instincts and what felt natural to me. Bags was it,
by the way, I do design umbrella's too!
You work with some of the biggest labels - and most
famous people - in the industry. How does it work - how do you
collaborate with people who presumably have quite strong ideas of
their own?
I love working like this, it's almost like entering into
a fairytale of a story that someone has told you and asked you to
play along, I don't try to make any of the work I do for other
brands about me, this isn't what I'm employed to do. You have to
work with the direction of the designer and follow the brand.
What are the most important things to consider when
designing a bag?
I probably should say functionality but it's not, first of all
it's the make of the bag, it has to made beautifully, even if the
bag is inexpensive it still has to be made perfectly. The materials
have to be desirable and feel luxurious. I like to think that you
should be able to put your bag on and feel sexy, fun and very
special.
How many handbags do you own?
Probably about 2,500. Wow, that sounds like I have a little bit of
a problem...
If you could only take one handbag with you to a desert
island, which would it be?
Umm, only one, that's slightly unfair seeing as I'm a
handbag designer, let's say I would need three. A Hillier Loewe
navy blue Ida, good for evening jaunts, my Black calf Victoria
Beckham Victoria bags, just to make me feel very special and it's
like a little piece of furniture so I would use it as a place to
keep things safe. And finally my Marc by Marc Classic Q Hillier
Hobo, perfect for foraging on the Island, and to snuggle up to at
night time. Do I sound totally batty?!
Is there anything that really annoys you when you see
people wearing a bag badly?
Ah, I think you have to appreciate everyone's individuality, let
them wear it how ever they want, there is not A good or bad way,
apart from perhaps leaving the price tag on or leaving the plastic
that comes on the metal details on.
Should handbags and shoes match?
It depends, out for lunch - no, at a wedding - yes, meeting the
Queen - defo. It really depends who you are and how you do it.
Which are the handbags that you think have been the most
influential in terms of design?
I think it's more about the people they have been named after to
be honest. Many iconic bags are iconic because they are named after
the most stylish women in the world, I'm not sure you can say that
the bag itself has been the influence versus the name it carries,
who do you want to be, the bag or the woman? In terms of actual
bags that have been the most influential to me, the bags that were
first designed for functionality, for a specific use, the doctor's
bag for example, the horses feed bag, the Pan Am airline bag.
What do you always carry in your handbag?
My Blackberry in its Rabito cover, my Harris Tweed coin purse (a
present from my boyfriend Patrick), a handmade pencil case from
Japan, notebook from japan, giant bunch of keys, Marc by Marc
sunglasses and my Oyster card.
If in doubt, what is your failsafe style
advice?
Skinny blue jeans, stripey sweater and jazzy flat shoes, and of
course a super-chic bag with personality.

What inspired you to go into fashion?
Probably from watching liberal doses of Fred Astaire and Ginger
Rogers movies in the 1950s which were more to do with the fantasy
worlds of opulence, glamour and style of the 1930s.
How did you start out?
This is a very long one.... (Why not read Bruce's biography
Rootless to find out more? You can buy it here.)
What advice would you give to a designer starting out
now?
Learn your craft, it's one thing to be able to draw but
if you can't communicate your ideas to technical people initially,
and then later to consumer pundits, then it'll be a struggle.
Which designers, if any, influenced your
style?
Three of the best Hollywood designers of the 30s and 40s - Adrian,
Orry-Kelly and Travis Banton.
What sets Bruce Oldfield apart from any other
label?
I am very hands-on and am involved in all aspects of the business
- this could also be a negative!
You are one of the most famous designers of your
generation - why did you decide to give up the catwalk
rigmarole?
Because it is rigmarole. Also, it's expensive rigmarole and as a
small independent house you had to make the decision as to who your
audience was, and did the bi-annual fashion shows bring anything to
that business model? The answer was no, but it doesn't mean that it
can't change - that's what I like about fashion, things change.
You worked for years with Diana, Princess of Wales. What
was she like? What was it about her that made her such a global
obsession?
She was great to work for. In her later years she knew exactly
what she wanted and early on, realised the power she had with the
media. Her fame and pulling-power was virally transmitted around
the world long before the internet could achieve that type of
instantaneous celebrity.
Is there anyone else like her? Could Catherine, Duchess
of Cambridge be such an icon?
I'm not sure that she wants to be an icon. It's too dangerous a
position to inhabit - up one day, down the next. I think she will
just press on doing her job beautifully.
Many people assumed that you would be asked to make the
Royal wedding dress this year - what would you have done with that
commission, had it arrived?
It's hard to say.

1:00pm GMT
How did you get your first job?
My first job was at 15 when I left school. I wanted to be a racing
cyclist but my dad said that it wasn't a real job. He knew
someone that had a wholesale warehouse (which was selling clothes
but not fashion), so l left school on Friday and started work on
Monday - no time for a holiday!
What was you first big break?
My breakthrough came at 18. After a bad crash on my bike and
three months in hospital, I stumbled across the local art school
crowd by chance whilst out drinking with some of the people I made
friends whilst in hospital. After several visits to the art school
pub, I discovered the world of creativity and ended up helping a
fashion student to open a "boutique". This meant I was in charge of
everything whilst the designer made the clothes; I ran the shop,
dressed the windows, cleaned up, unpacked, served customers - that
was the start.
What advice would you give to anyone trying to get into
the industry now and hoping for a career like yours?
Don't underestimate starting in a simple, humble way. Getting as
much experience as you can, ideally in the industry you are hoping
to be in. But actually just working and understanding about
communication and the way the world works is an essential
ingredient to progressing to the career of your choice.

OXFAM.ORG.UK is calling on some famous
friends this week to reveal their experiences with the charity and
to recommend their top pick from its online shop. First up is
Miquita Oliver:
Tell us about your Oxfam experience:
When I was on T4, I bought 12 new outfits every six weeks, gave
endless bags to charity shops but never thought about what happened
after. It is estimated only 15% of clothes that the UK public
donate to charities every year, actually makes it to charity shops,
with the rest incinerated or going to landfill. But Oxfam is doing
something different and I was invited to visit the Frip Ethique
initiative in Senegal, West Africa, to see first-hand how Oxfam's
unsold clothing donations are changing people's lives. Frip Ethique
is an Oxfam-run initiative based in Dakar, which sorts and sells
clothing from the UK to local second-hand merchants. After decades
of conflict, the country's economy is in a desperate situation with
half the population unemployed and living below the poverty line.
Frip Ethique has created jobs, invested money back into local
communities and empowered its female employees that they can work,
support their families, and save money for their futures. During my
trip it was announced that Frip Ethique's year profits totalled
over £100,000 and all the employees would get a bonus, there were
tears of happiness.
What would you buy from the Oxfam shop?
This dress is an absolute classic. It has a wonderful old school
prom look about it, but is also in beautiful vintage lace which
adds class. You could team it up with a leather jacket
and a pair of converse to dress it down or a bit of
fake fur and some heels to dress it up for your Christmas
party.
