FROM Anna Dello Russo and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld in the front row to the gone 45-minute delay to the start of the show, it was clear this afternoon that Marios Schwab is still very much holding on to his London fashion darling crown – drawing in the crowds (and there were crowds – they had to crouch on steps). to see his spring/summer 2012 collection which, the show notes instructed, was not about a decade or a woman but about an attitude.

“Everything I do is about hiding and revealing. It [the new collection] encapsulates my passions for an iconic woman, mixing character, an attitude, all the emotions, it’s a very personal collection,” the half Greek, half Austrian designer had revealed earlier in the day to The Daily.

Anchored in film noir heroines, there was mystery and intrigue through lattice panel constructed dresses who showed off svelte silhouettes to perfection – they came in lilac and mint, white and black, some with sweetheart necklines and others in swim halter necks. Seams became part of their show, to create additional patterns through shading. Cardigan capes trailed elegantly from shoulders though seemed not to be attached while waists were sleekly belted.

You could just see the silver screen’s icons sauntering around in these – especially the gowns at the end that glistened with jewels and splayed with glamour. Ginger Rogers and Rita Hayworth eat your heart out.

Not interested in designing trends, Schwab has an aesthetic to which he sticks (his father was an underwear engineer and you can see how the influence – Schwab’s celebration of the female form – rubbed off). And, had this been a music concert, he would find it to be quite the sell-out.
