ANN-SOFIE BACK may have called on some grand themes for her spring/summer 2012 Atelje collection – namely God, holy aesthetics and “the crease in the tablecloth of the last supper” – but she gave us 12 sophisticated looks worthy of any woman’s wardrobe.

Building on last season’s sense of Nineties minimalism – in which inspiration came from the design of cars – silhouettes were sharp with crisp lines, free from embellishment and with a predominantly monochrome palette. Diffusion came from the odd flash of stripe - informed by the aforementioned tablecloth – while angular linen tunics and sheer calf-skimming skirts created a lighter, less constructed look than seasons past, despite the heavy inspiration.

Moving swiftly on to her secondary line, Back, the Swedish designer sustained the lighter mood with three themes – tiny belts, stand-out darts and boning details – and splashes of fuchsia pink and midnight blue punctuating the reigning black and white. Although cuts were still clean, skinny knits and polo neck tops added a sporty edge, while a full, wide, navy skirt and delicate pleated tee signalled a more languid look. A long linen balloon dress and stone jumpsuit, both with a signature narrow belt grazing the hips, infused a fresh, summery feel to the Back look.
