JEAN PAUL GAULTIER’S informal show venue set the tone for his latest collection. This season the designer opted against his traditional catwalk format, choosing instead a showroom-style environment with no organised seating, where models changed into various outfits in full view of editors, stylists and buyers.
Such a store-appointment-like setting gave Gaultier the chance to present an offering without a finite theme – giving us commercially brilliant items that varied from bright Hawaiian shirts and checked suiting, to seriously covetable Breton sailor jumpers - teamed with little shorts.
The designer played with juxtaposition, combining formal tuxedos, white shirts and bow ties with more casual bright floral shorts. Dressy black cummerbunds were matched with blue trousers covered with a Hawaiian-style floral print and white trainers. It may not be to every man’s liking, but individual pieces will surely be a hit with both boys and girls.
