Show Report

GIORGIO ARMANI is looking to make every man slimmer for spring/summer 2012, if his thoughts about his latest menswear collection are anything to go by.

“The use of print on both shirts and trousers creates an interesting visual effect,” said the designer backstage during the Milan show today. “It elongates and streamlines the silhouette, [and] is set off by the contrasting jacket with its soft line and natural proportions.”

The visual prints of which he spoke included graphic zig-zags and confident squares – smothering much of the collection, including jumpers as well as trousers which stopped short of the ankle to reveal smart lace-up espadrilles – as well as touches of dog-tooth. Armani’s prints conform to the week’s trend for bold patterns, as seen at Alexander McQueen, Prada and Neil Barrett.

While the prints were strong, the manner in which they were administered was light.

Based around an unseasonal yet city-smart colour palette of grey, putty and blue, open jackets and flowing long coats, billowing trousers, and thin knits - smoothly layered-up with buttoned shirts and ties - easily spoke of Armani’s desired “streamlined” silhouette.
