ELEGANCE and the Edwardian era provided the sartorial backdrop for Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garcons menswear show today. That and a bit of punk and biker edge mixed in. So we had, as we have largely come to expect from Comme, a black palette that later wavered into pinstripe territory through jackets and trousers, whose length stopped shy of the ankle. These looks came topped off with bejeweled crowns to depict the aforementioned supposed anarchy.

Grey houndstooth, too, wandered into the equation, sizing up jackets whose sleeves scrunched themselves up into texture and onto matching shirts beneath. Again, wrists were on show in symmetrical support of the ankles underneath them, which came clad in pink or orange socks for a fluoro styling detail. The jackets and blazers, of course, became more ornate and irregular as the show went on – Kawakubo has built her design name upon such constructions after all – with duffel-hoodie-blazer hybrids, and green and red colour combinations. As if to convey her punkier sensibilies to her man this season, each model took to the catwalk with curled, horn-like locks, pointed into place with perfect precision.
